Sunday Travel Photo #64: Diamond Head

View from Diamond Head Crater.  O'ahu Island.  Hawaii.  June 2014.

Overview of Diamond Head Crater

Diamond Head Crater refers to a tuff cone that is volcanic, found in the island of O’ahu in Hawaii. British sailors who found calcite crystals in the beach adjacent to it and thought they were diamonds gave the name to it back in the 19th century. The natives commonly refer to it as Lēʻahi. It forms part of the Honolulu Volcanic Series and is estimated to have been formed over 200,000 years ago. The 3,500feet diameter and 760 foot summit makes it probably the most recognized crater in the world. The prominent landmark is known mainly for amazing scenery, hiking trails, and military history. It is also a United States Monument.

Top Attractions

Hiking trail. The crater has a 0.75 mile(1.1 kilometres) hiking trail that goes all the way up to the rim of the crater. The trail is mostly unpaved and the uneven rocks on it make it quite a challenge. The trail was built in 1908.
Coastal artillery platform. This is an observation point that was built in 1908. It offers a great and detailed view of the Pacific Ocean and Waikiki. It can be accessed through a series of steps and a small tunnel, a total ascend of about 762 feet.
Geologic and historical sites. The crater itself is part of the various geological features found there. The historical sites include the military base, which still has a battery of cannons that was built by the U.S. army in 1904.

How to get there

A flight to the Honolulu International Airport, located in Oahu island in Hawaii. Airport shuttles or rented cars will take you to Waikiki and taking bus number 58, 23 or 22 will get you to the diamond Head

  1. That sky is so gorgeous! And, the water scene very tranquil. So amazing how relaxing it is to look over water. Love hearing the sound of the waves crashing on shore. Brings back many happy memories of childhood and playing on the beach. :)

  2. There are a lot of steps on this walk! We like walking but doing it jet lagged wasn't our best move! If you have the time and the energy do this walk as the views are just great ...and coming down is SO nice after going up!
